Having fun out on the water is what draws more people to lakes, rivers, and other waterways. While most Ontario residents know that boat insurance is necessary for any type of boat, many of these same people who own jet skis don’t consider them the same as a boat. However, just because you are running a water based motorcycle, so to speak, that doesn’t mean you should even consider opting out of insurance.
In fact, it’s a Canadian law that you must have your water motor craft registered and insured. Yet it’s also one of the most commonly overlooked or ignored issues.
This is often because many people either don’t think it is necessary or they don’t want to spend the money on a personal watercraft insurance. While some owners do have passengers, more often than not they are used as single passenger vehicles. The desire to save some money is often very tempting.
That puts the owner and others on the water at risk. Even for the experienced rider, anything can happen. Just as being on the open roads can be risky, water sports also have risks involved.
Be sure that you are covered with your jet ski or other personal watercraft. This is for safety sake, but also to comply with the law. While you may find that your insurance rate quote is higher than you want to spend, there are plenty of ways to save money.
The best first step is to contact your insurance broker. If you don’t have one, find one close to you who understands your needs. If you have auto insurance, homeowner’s insurance, or even renter’s insurance, you may be able to bundle your boater’s insurance to save money.
Having fun this summer is great. If something unexpected occurs –accident, injury, or other mishap- make sure you have the coverage you need to get back on your feet and still enjoy these warm, wonderful months.
